Wool is bought from India as rugs, carpets, blankets, knitwear, shawls and scarves. The strongest wool centres are Bhadohi–Mirzapur and Panipat for rugs, Ludhiana for knitwear, Amritsar for woollens and Srinagar for pashmina.

What to ask for in the RFQ and check when goods arrive.

  * Specify wool origin, micron and blend percentage, and ask for fibre composition tests.
  * For rugs, test colour fastness and ask about moth-proofing treatment.
  * For pashmina, buy from GI-registered producers and ask for a fibre test.

### What is pashmina?

Pashmina is fine cashmere wool from Changthangi goats of Ladakh, hand-spun and woven in Kashmir. Kashmir Pashmina is GI-registered.

### Where are wool rugs made in India?

Bhadohi–Mirzapur and Panipat are the largest centres, with Jaipur and Srinagar known for fine hand-knotted rugs.

### Where is woollen knitwear made?

Ludhiana is India's main woollen knitwear centre, making sweaters, cardigans and winter accessories.
