# Electronics inspection: what we check.

An electronics inspection combines safety tests, a full function test and a cosmetic check on a random sample drawn to ANSI/ASQ Z1.4. Here is what our inspectors check on consumer electronics and electrical products.

Electronics and electricals

**Critical** Hi-pot (dielectric strength) failure

**Major** Function failure: power, a button, mode, display or indicator

**Minor** Light scratch on the housing

Small appliances, chargers and power supplies, lighting, audio, wearables, battery-powered devices and accessories.

Defects by class

## Critical, major, minor: how we class them.

Each defect in the sample is photographed and counted in its class. Your AQL plan sets how many are allowed; for critical defects the answer is none.

AQL 0

### Critical defects

Likely to injure the user or breaks a mandatory rule of the destination market. One critical defect in the sample means the lot is not accepted.

  * Hi-pot (dielectric strength) failure
  * Earth continuity failure on a Class I product
  * Exposed live parts or damaged insulation
  * Plug that does not match the market standard
  * Battery swelling, leaking or overheating

AQL 2.5 typical

### Major defects

Likely to cause a failure, reduce usability or make the product unsaleable, so a customer would return it.

  * Function failure: power, a button, mode, display or indicator
  * Charging failure or run time below specification
  * Wireless pairing or range failure
  * Rating label wrong, missing or not durable
  * CE, UKCA, FCC or WEEE marking missing where required
  * Crack or gap in the housing; dead pixels beyond specification
  * Missing accessory or manual

AQL 4.0 typical

### Minor defects

A departure from the specification that does not affect use and is unlikely on its own to cause a return.

  * Light scratch on the housing
  * Slightly uneven gap between housing parts
  * Print slightly off position
  * Dust under a protective film

Your specification and approved sample decide the final class. Where a buyer defines zones (for example, zone A for the most visible surfaces), a defect in zone A is usually classed higher than the same defect in a hidden area.

On-site tests

## Tests we run at the factory.

  1. 01

**Hi-pot test**

Dielectric strength at the voltage and time of the product standard (e.g. IEC 60335-1 or IEC 62368-1).

  2. 02

**Earth continuity**

Resistance between the earth pin and exposed metal on Class I products.

  3. 03

**Input power**

Power and current at rated voltage against the rating label.

  4. 04

**Full function test**

Every button, mode, indicator and display, plus charging and pairing.

  5. 05

**Internal check**

One unit opened: wiring, soldering, insulation and key components against the approved construction.

  6. 06

**Cord pull**

Strain relief holds the cord under a firm pull.

Measurements

## Points we measure.

Measurement points for electronics and electricals Point| How we measure
---|---
Overall length, width, height| Calipers against the specification
Cable length| Plug to product, in metres
Plug pin dimensions| Where the plug is part of the product
Button travel and fit| Against the golden sample
Weight| Scale, in grams

Unit: mm unless stated. We measure at least five units per size or version against your specification and tolerances, and report every reading.

Packing and labelling

## Packed right, labelled right.

  * All accessories, cables and manuals in each box
  * Foam or pulp inserts hold the product without movement
  * Circuit boards and spares in antistatic bags
  * Gift box artwork, barcodes and model number match the product
  * Lithium battery handling marks on cartons where the shipping rules require them
  * Shipping marks, carton count, gross weight and dimensions agree with the packing list

Market marks

## What your market expects.

EU
CE marking with a Declaration of Conformity covering LVD, EMC, RoHS and RED as applicable; crossed-out wheelie bin (WEEE).

UK
UKCA or CE as the UK rules allow; WEEE mark.

US
FCC Part 15 authorisation for devices with digital or radio circuits; NRTL listing (such as UL or ETL) where your retailer requires it.

Australia and NZ
RCM mark, with registration on the EESS database for in-scope electrical equipment.

Plugs
BS 1363 (UK), CEE 7 (EU), NEMA 1-15 or 5-15 (US), AS/NZS 3112 (Australia and NZ).

We check marks and documents against your specification. Your compliance team or test lab confirms which rules apply to your exact product.

How we inspect it

## On the floor, step by step.

We bring calibrated hi-pot and earth testers, run the safety tests first, then the full function test, then the cosmetic check. One unit is opened and compared with the approved construction so component changes are caught early.

Suggested planLevel II with AQL 0 / 2.5 / 4.0 is common. Safety tests often run on every sampled unit or a special-level plan.

Electronics inspection questions

## Straight answers.

Anything else, ask us directly. A principal replies, not a bot.

[anirudh@sourcesquid.co](mailto:anirudh@sourcesquid.co)

### What safety tests do you run during an electronics inspection?

Hi-pot (dielectric strength), earth continuity on Class I products, input power at rated voltage and a cord pull check, using calibrated equipment. Full certification testing is done by an accredited lab.

### Do you open units during the inspection?

Yes, usually one unit. We compare the wiring, soldering, insulation and key components with the approved construction or the certified sample, so any component change is caught before shipment.

### What counts as a critical defect in electronics?

Anything that could cause a shock, fire or injury: a hi-pot or earth continuity failure, exposed live parts, damaged insulation, a wrong plug or a swollen battery. One critical defect means the lot is not accepted.
